M. DAGUERRE’S DISCOVERY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES.

Sir, - Reading in a newspaper last week that a German had found out M. Daguerre’s secret, I was so impreased with that testimony to the possibility of seixing a shadow, that I thought ever all the little I knew of light, colours, and chymistry ; the next day, the 15th inst., I took a piece of writing paper, hastily prepared by msyself, placed it behind the lens of a camera obscura made on the spur of the moment, and obtained a satisfactory result, for the trees in front of my house were produced, but not the parts agitated by the wind. Since that, I have obtained, progressively improving, several landscapes, which may be called most appositely “lucigraphs” I mentien my hulmble effort as corroborative of the reality or feasibility of M. Daguerre’s beautiful discovery ; and I can readily conceive that in a very short time the traveller’s portmanteau will not be complete without the very portable means of procuring a lucigraph at pleasure. I remain your obedient servent.

The Daguerreotype. – One great obstacle to the use of M. Daguerre's photegenic process is the difficulty of preserving the pictures when completed, because they are of so delicate a nature, and so easily injured, that tho slightest touch effaces them; even M. Daguerre himself as always found it necessary to protect them with a plate of glas, which is both inconvenient and troublesome; and it has, in consequence, been suggested, that if a varnish could be discovered, which might easily be applied to the surface of the plates after the completion of the pictures, and which, while it protected them from injury, should not impair their delicacy, it would considerably add to the value and use-fulness of the process; we are happy, therefore, to hear, that M. Dumas has discovered that a liquid, composed of one part of dextrine and five parts of water, forms a varnish of the desired nature. It is said to be well adapted for the purpose, and further possesses the advantage of being easily removed from the surface of the picutre, by immersing the whole in boiling water. Time, however, will be required to ascertain whether this varnish has any action on the peculiar mercurial compound of which the image is formed. - Ataenœum.

THE PENCIL OF NATURE,

“ The little work now presented to the public is the first attempt to publish a series of plates or pictures wholly executed by the new art of photogenic drawing, without any aid whatever from the artist’s pencil”

Such is the modest preface with which the author of this work introduces his very beautiful and valuable discovery. A discovery it may be justly termed; for though the public has long been acquainted with the general principles of photography, as exhibited  in M. Daguerre’s invention, still it has been reserved for Mr. Talbot to devise a new and totally different application of the same principle, which bids fair to eclipse all former discoveries on the subject.

Without going into the circomstances which led to the secceful application of the chymical properties of the light ti the purposes of drawing on paper, it is sufficient to mention the fact that so early as 1834 Mr. Talbot commenced the experiments which have resulted in the art of photogenic drawing, by which every material object, from the stately building to the minute ramifications of a leaf or flower, are clearly and distinctly impressed upon paper by the hand of nature, whitout any artistical aid whatever. We earnestly commend this work to the notice of the public.
